Google throws Jaiku with a Dodgeball

logo-jaikuLast year, with the closing of Pownce, I tried to speculate who would close next hinting in the direction of Jaiku. Google is cleaning house and are in the process of shutting down some of its properties. No, Jaiku was not canned to my surprise!

Instead they are porting Jaiku to Google App Engine and releasing the source code, which means that we can all have our own flavour of Jaiku‘s one of these days! Not a bad idea. Google stated:

While Google will no longer actively develop the Jaiku codebase, the service itself will live on thanks to a dedicated and passionate volunteer team of Googlers.

I’m not entirely convinced that this could revive Jaiku, but I do think it is a cool idea to Open Source it! Jaiku would be a good example of how to develop an App Engine project by example. That is always a very cool way to learn more!

Speaking of App Engine. I have not heard much of it lately… Is Google App Engine taking off as they expected? I’m asking as I’m not watching developments happening over there…
