During the prenatal developmental
period, there are significant physical and physiological changes that occur in
a fetus. The prenatal period is the time between when conception occurs and
birth. There are periods in the prenatal development, the germinal period, the
embryonic period, and the fetal period. During the germinal period, the zygote
is formed, and cells begin to rapidly undergo mitosis.  It is also during this time that the cells
that are created become differentiated into specialty cells. The next period is
the embryonic period. This part of the prenatal development consists of more
and more cells becoming differentiated at a much rapid rate and organs begin to
form. The formation of the embryo has three different parts to it. There is the
endoderm, which is the inner layer of cells; the ectoderm, which is the outer
layer, and the mesoderm, which is the middle layer. During this period the
placenta, the umbilical cord and the amnion all form to help sustain the fetus
throughout the rest of the stages. If there is a disturbance in the formation
of these three layers or if the three layers are unable to form into their
respect organs, then the fetus will be born with defects. The final period is
the fetal period. This period is the longest compared to the other periods, so
much of the development occurs here. The fetus begins to move its extremities
and begins to open and close its mouth. Different features of the fetus become
more and more visible.  The genitals of
the fetus can become identifiable. The brain and the spinal cord form and if
this does not occur properly then we can see. Near the end of the 9 months,
that is where fatty tissue and organs, such as the heart and kidneys, begin to
take on more. The brain begins to make connections throughout the entire body.

This is focused on even near the end of the third trimester and after the baby
is born.
