Q1. Choose an example of a failed project and write 2-3 paragraphs describing why the project failed. Reference what you have learned in lectures 1 – 3.
There are several reasons for Project Failure. Some of them are:
The Airbus A 380 employed about 55,000 work-force with 20 different language speaking people from 16 project sites namely UK, Germany, France, Spain.
The complexity of working form different geographical locations with people from different languages, background, culture and time without a Unifying Higher Management Office caused an overlook on key issues which were to be addressed at the right time. Eventually this resulted to a more degenerated situation of higher costs, technical challenges and delays. A well-structured project management system would have taken care of this.
The project lacked a Quality Assurance set-up and this resulted in a big chaos. For repeatability and consistency of the process, all the locations were supposed use and work with same set of standards, specifications and drawings. This should have been coordinated by higher management initially and hence lack of coordination between the teams impacted the whole project. Special trainings should have been organized for the engineers on the operability of the design software to boost the productivity and flow of information across sites.
The project started in 2002, with the aim of first batch of aircraft delivery scheduled for 2006. In June 2005 it announced its first delay for a period of 6 months, it ended up having almost 2 years delay. It was finally delivered in October 2007.The delay was due to both technical and complex logistic framework. This also led to project overrun.
The project had exceeded the estimated budget by 2 billion euros due to complex logistics involved in transporting parts from different site locations, order cancelations and order penalties. This was a result of lack of proper communication, technical challenges, and politics amongst other difficulties in the project.
Q2. Assume that your company is tasked with installing solar panels on the roof of CEI. List three risk events and complete the table below:
Action Plan Contingency Strategy
Leads to installation errors, loss of time, money, and customer satisfaction.
Conduct specific trainings and Workshops for the staff on the technology prior to the start of project.
Climate and Weather (Snow, Wind)
Hinders your Work speed.
Estimate the total project taking in consideration of weather factors. Proceed with installation only if it’s feasible.
It may affect the structure of whole building. As the roof is designed to withstand a certain weight.
Perform a quality check of the building and install the safe number of panels.
Q3. The MOE has requested that your company provide results from water samples taken on three non-consecutive days at a location 100m downstream of the discharge location. Your team has identified the following tasks:
1. Assuming that the team visits sampling location.
2. Order Sampling equipment.
3. Take three samples with at least one day in between each.
4. Send samples out for analysis.
5. Receive report back from Analysis Company.
6. Meet with the team to discuss results.
7. Meet with MOE to report results.
