Almost every country in the world
has had problems with gender equality. Most people of the world prefer to
assume that a certain gender has certain features or it can be said that the
sexism of the world community has created a certain mindset that led to the
emergence of certain gender discrimination. Of course this makes the occurrence
of violations of a particular gender, especially in women.
The rights and opportunities of
women and girls have not been fully obtained. They require greater effort,
especially the legal framework, to achieve gender equality, empower women, and
fight gender-based discrimination that is often the result of patriarchal
culture and prevailing social norms.
Secretary General of the UN said
that data from 2005 to 2016 for 87 countries, 19 percent of women between the
ages of 15 and 49 years have experienced physical or sexual abuse by an
intimate partner. In the most extreme cases, such violence can lead to death.
In 2012, nearly half of all women who were victims of intentional murder by
intimate partners or family members, while only 6 percent of male victims. The
practice of female genital mutilation has decreased by 24 percent since 2000.
However, prevalence remains high in some of the 30 countries from around 2015, there
are more than 1 in 3 women between the ages of 15 and 19 have undergone this
procedure compared to almost 1 in 2 girls around 2000.
There are still many more acts of
discrimination or human rights action against women. Not only the social aspect
or the family, even at the job title there is still a difference to women. Survey
data from 83 countries and regions said that the average amount of time spent
on housework and unpaid care is up to three times higher for women than men. The
participation of women parliaments in the national parliament reaches 23.4
percent by 2017, 10 percent higher than 2000. From 2009 to 2015, in most of the
67 countries, less than a third of senior and middle management positions are
held by women, shows that women still underrepresented in managerial positions.
The present state of affairs has
shown little change in statistics in cases that occur worldwide. But, this is
far from enough because the level of awareness of the two genders is not high
enough to see that the world does not contain just one gender that dominates
all things, but it takes both genes to complement each other and meet the same
Seeing what is going on, what needs
to be known is gender equality and what causes them. In addition, legal laws
that strengthen the regulation on the realization of gender equality are
needed, especially in Indonesia. These will be discussed in this paper so that
all people can see that gender equality is not a bad thing and worth fighting
