“Each should be adopted. Animal testing is

“Each year, more than 100 million animals—including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds—are killed in U.S. laboratories for chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing” (“Using Animals For”). Animals are placed in laboratories on a daily basis and forced to undergo testing that will likely cause them pain, suffering, or stress. The tests are used to assess the safety and effectiveness of a wide variety of products ranging from cosmetics to medications. Animal experiments are conducted virtually everywhere and a majority of products have likely been tested on tortured animals before being distributed. I believe these tests are cruel, not beneficial to scientific research, and other methods of experimentation should be adopted. Animal testing is a cruel and unnecessary process used worldwide. For example, an article talking about the conditions animals experience states,”Before their deaths, some are forced to inhale toxic fumes, others are immobilized in restraint devices for hours, some have holes drilled into their skulls, and others have their skin burned off…” (“Medical Testing On”). pathos These animals are forced to live in isolation, usually in cages, and take part in horrific experiences that will likely leave them with lasting harm. Furthermore, many laboratories have intentions of killing the animals during the tests, or after they have been exploited in the experiments. For instance, the founder of a group called People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, led police into a laboratory called the Institute for Behavioral Research in Maryland. Once inside, police officers served their warrant, seizing seventeen small monkeys, survivors from a much larger group. The monkeys were in critical condition. Their lustrous hair was in clumps and many had open wounds. anecdote Inside, they discovered that, “Animals are burned alive in the cockpits of planes, exploded in weapons tests, and forced to inhale pollutants until they choke to death. They are starved and shot; they have hallucinogens and electrical shocks administered to them; they are force-fed poisons and used to demonstrate already well established surgical procedures” (“Animal Testing Is”). These experiments cause severe suffering and are inhumane. The results can be obtained in a much less brutal way and animals should not be exploited. On the other hand, some people believe that animal testing is essential to drug and vaccine research. They claim that animal experiments have been vital in discovering drugs useful for human treatment. Supporters argue that many new technologies are being developed that are making animal testing more humane and reliable. However, the experiments are still untrustworthy sources of information and are extremely harmful to the subjects. For instance, “The Food and Drug Administration has noted that 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials because they don’t work or are dangerous” (“Animal Testing Is”). The results received from animal tests are likely to be faulty and not accurate for humans. There are many alternative options for animal experimentation that all work alike. In conclusion, there are many safer and more effective options that should be pursued instead of harming animals. A combination of didactic methods, human patient simulators, interactive computer programs, and clinical experience can be used in place of animal testing. logos Laboratories and brands should embrace new methods of testing to fuel their research, and move towards being cruelty free. Do you want to be responsible for the death of innocent animals? rhetorical question Millions of lives could be saved every year if we all take the step towards preventing animal experimentation. Nothing is worse than doing nothing.  epanelepsis I have accepted the challenge of becoming cruelty free and I know you can too. ethos It is time for us to speak out against this animal abuse and advocate alternative methods in order to protect our furry friends.
