Nowadays, the gaming industry seems to be growing significantly fast in almost every country. Video games started with simple style, gameplay, and graphics, then through many decades, they have evolved into a realistic simulation of a real world including gorgeous graphics and complex game system. Recently, the rapid development of traditional and disruptive technology has enabled video games to quickly gain more and more popularity among children at all ages, even very young, and gradually become an essential form of everyday entertainment. In fact, a study reveals that video games are played by 92% of children and adolescents aged 2-17. Up to now, there have been a lot of debates about the benefits and drawbacks of video games on children in that age group. Several types of research indicate that the playing electronic games significantly increase children’ general knowledge as well as some important skills like problem-solving and quick reaction, but on the contrary, many scientists argue that these benefits are outweighed by the drawbacks that they offer. Overall, we can clearly see that the play of electronic games of children mostly brings negative influence on children, including both mental and physical health as well as social and school problems.Firstly, there are many physical health issues relating to the excessive time spending on video games of all ages children. Today, most children tend to prefer enjoying video games inside than getting out and do some physical sports and games. Therefore, due to that lack of physical exercises and long hours of sitting in front of computer and TV screens, children seem to be weaker, less active and more vulnerable to different types of diseases than before. Moreover, a study shows that the low level of physical activity is responsible for more than 5 million deaths globally. This study also illustrates that the recommended level of physical activity is not reached by approximately 80% of children and adolescents in 105 countries, that is at least 60 minutes of strong activity daily. Children who spend an excessive amount of time on video games could suffer from legs, back, neck and shoulder pain caused by sitting for long hours. Besides, they tend to consume a lot of junk food while playing video games, which is likely to increase the chance of getting obese. Especially, electronic games can easily hurt children eyes. It is reported that 64 to 90% of users experience visual symptoms such as eyestrain, headaches, dry eye, discomfort, blurred vision and double vision with their amount of time spent on gadgets. In addition, high screen time may lead to the increase in heart rate and blood pressure, as well as sleep deprivation on children.Secondly, video games can impair mental health of children, “video games change your brain” according to University of Wisconsin psychologist C. Shawn Green. There are a lot of research focused on the connection between violent content in the game and children’ aggressive behavior. Particularly, a recent study in United Kingdom used representative sample of about 11,000 5-year-old children to measure the time they spend on playing video games and watching TV or DVDs, initially found that the hour spent on them at five years simply associates to the increases in behavioral and emotional problems by the time the children aged seven. Besides that, young-aged children who lack real world awareness are more likely to be mentally affected by the action in the game due to the realistic and sophisticated of this kind of entertainment. They can become overstimulated and excited when doing games for a long time, then even gradually confuse between the reality and fantasy. In a huge number of electronic games that contain the killing of people and animals or several other criminal actions, children are awarded for being violent. Therefore, they can imitate that violent as well as start to form aggressive thoughts, behavior, and disorder. Additionally, according to a study published in 2012 in the Journal of Psychology and Popular Media Culture, children investing the high amount of times on electronic games may have impulse behavior and experience attention problem. Furthermore, losing consecutively in the games makes children feel depressed, scared and even worry about some simple things.Equally important, there is even a link between violent video games and criminal offense of the children and adolescents. Some research examined the impact of criminal media on criminal thinking of young children. Particularly, a number of student shootings in the US are associated with the violent content of media. For example, a second deadliest mass shooting in American history by a single person – the Newtown Massacre was committed by twenty-year-old Adam Lanza who was reported to have frequently played FPS games (first-person shooter, a violent game genre). Especially, in one country, a child even murders his parents to steal cash because of his addiction to video games.Thirdly, the play of electronic games can seriously affect children’ social life and their parents’ finance. Immense video games time makes children isolated from the real world. They are also likely to spend less time on important activities such as reading, sport, do homework, household chores, or even sleeping. Nowadays, children tend to prefer playing games to hanging out with their friends or family like before. Also, video games influence parents’ finance since games are advancing significantly fast as well as require powerful and expensive devices to play.Next, various studies have reported that a negative association between the amount of time spent on video games and performance at school of children. One study indicated that 26% of children who played video games performed poorly on their homework and in-class attention. In addition, children have less time to study and read books due to their time on playing video games. Finally, some solutions should be carried out to raise children’ awareness of appropriate screen time. First, for parents, they should not allow their preschool-aged children to approach video games. Before purchasing any games, parents should check the ESRB ratings. Moreover, playing video games together with children to share the experience and knowledge as well as guide them toward the appropriate moral behavior. Children should play under clear rules about game content, playtime and the monitor of their parents. Children should only be allowed to use computer or TV after they have finished all their homework, household chores and preparation for the next classes, and fully checked by their parents. Besides, parents should encourage their child or daughter to participate in physical activities. When it comes to government, they should limit the purchase of video games for children, and strictly apply the policies to give appropriate age-rating for games. Additionally, a piece of ID should be required to buy some particular games. In conclusion, the use of video games has brought several impacts on children health and social life. It can impair the physical as well as mental health and reduce the time that children should spend on other activities such as sports and study. But we cannot deny the benefits that appropriate play of video games can offer to children. They include the improvement of critical and creative thinking and the ability to react quickly to different situations. Children’ brain also slightly improved by playing electronic games. Personally, I hope every parent will have suitable ways to control the video games playtime for their children, which will help them entertain and avoid the risk to their health and personal life.
