OverviewThe Mexico, Europe, and Australia. The first

OverviewThe westward expansion started when us president Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase. He bought land from the French for 15 million dollars (around 250 million in today’s money)/. Jefferson deeply believed that America’s future would be by expanding to the west. Some people called this the manifest destiny, Americans bringing democracy and civilization to the rest of North America.California gold rushJames Marshall was building a sawmill at Sutter’s Mill owned by John Sutter, he found a golden nugget in the river and although they tried to keep it a secret word quickly spread to the east. around 14,000 non-Native Americans lived in California. 6,000 people arrived in 1848, in 1849 around 90,000 people arrived to hunt for gold.they were called for 49ers for they left their homes at the year of 1849 (Now the football team from California is called 49ers after the gold rush)there were lots of Americans but many came from places like China, Mexico, Europe, and Australia. The first of the pioneers used a technique called panning were they take sand from the bottom of the river and try to find gold in it, later more complex techniques were used. Minicamps were built wherever there was gold.after a while, these small camps were built into bigger villages called boomtowns. Boomtowns usually grew and had casinos saloons post offices and hospitals. A lot of boomtowns eventually got abandoned due to the lack of gold and the pioneers moving on to other places, these places were called ghost towns. When the gold ran out in an area, the 49ere would leave to find more gold. The businesses would leave too and soon the town would be abandoned. Historians think that around 12 million ounces of gold were mined that would be worth $20 billion in today’s money.┬ámexican American warTexas had been a state of the country of Mexico since 1821, the year Mexico gained its independence.
