Relationship of oxidative stress
with lifestyle, health and aging

Abstract

Oxidative stress is a destructive factor that can damage
cellular structures due to lipid oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS),
causing premature cell death and multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including
MS, cancer, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, skin diseases and heart diseases. This is due to
increased free radicals and a reduction in the antioxidant defense of the body.
At low levels, the oxidative stress induced by ROS can be controlled by the
antioxidants effect; however, when excessive ROS is present, the inflammation
and cytotoxicity result in cell damage. The mitochondria are the main source of
ROS in the cell, resulting in the formation of superoxide radicals by combining
oxygen with free electrons. In this paper, we examine the current knowledge
about oxidative stress interference in neurodegenerative diseases based on
clinical and animal studies. In addition, we analyze the induced modulatory
effects of the drugs in the oxidative balance, and examine drug therapies to
reduce the oxidative stress.
